What is “live drawing”?
It’s one of the rare moments when I share my creative process with those around me. Maybe even the only one.
A few years ago, someone asked me whether I could come to a wedding and draw the guests. They had seen my drawings for “Les dames de Bucarest” and fallen in love with them. It felt like something very difficult to do. Drawing under pressure—both of time and of the people who would receive the drawings—seemed like a pretty risky bet. But since I don’t place sports bets, I might as well take bets with my own work. So I accepted. And who doesn’t like a bit of adrenaline?
That very first night, I discovered that people like the idea of being drawn. I also discovered that they actually like the way I do it. It was overwhelming. I didn’t expect so many positive reactions or so much appreciation.
And every event that followed—whether a wedding, a corporate event, or a private one—confirmed people’s interest in this kind of artistic expression.
These quick drawings are called croquis. There are some things you simply can’t do without many hours of practice, no matter how much talent you have, and croquis drawing is one of them.
